Animated molecular textures


The image above, of course, doesn't do the technique any favours -- you'll have to imagine the animation. By default there isn't any control over the display either though I suppose it might be possible to capture/play multiple animations and add, pause/restart and a limited zoom.

I'm more than a little wary of installing third-party software so caveat emptor but tried this on a semi-retired PC and it seems to work and may be of use:
  1. Generate an animated gif for your pdb id using PolyView, http://polyview.cchmc.org/polyview3d.html
  2. Use the converter (Windows only) at http://nivardus.com/sl/slanim.html/ (source code available) to create the texture file; upload the texture.
  3. Add the script to the destination prim (set to Full Bright).
  4. Ctrl-drag the texture onto the prim. Edit the file name to change speed, etc.
