The image above, of course, doesn't do the technique any favours -- you'll have to imagine the animation. By default there isn't any control over the display either though I suppose it might be possible to capture/play multiple animations and add, pause/restart and a limited zoom.
I'm more than a little wary of installing third-party software so caveat emptor but tried this on a semi-retired PC and it seems to work and may be of use:
- Generate an animated gif for your pdb id using PolyView, http://polyview.cchmc.org/polyview3d.html
- Use the converter (Windows only) at http://nivardus.com/sl/slanim.html/ (source code available) to create the texture file; upload the texture.
- Add the script to the destination prim (set to Full Bright).
- Ctrl-drag the texture onto the prim. Edit the file name to change speed, etc.

The eagle-eyed will note that there shouldn't be a / at the end of the URL.
That link seems to have died -- an alternative at http://secondlife.mitsi.com/Secondlife/Posts/Gif/Create-Gif-in-Second-Life.htm
